Periodontal Treatment: Choosing the Right Option for You

Periodontal treatment, among other general dentistry practices, is used to treat gum diseases. Periodontitis, which is associated with damages to the structure surrounding the teeth, is a gum disease. Mostly the cause of periodontitis is the colorless covering (bacterial plaque) that sticks to the tooth and, if left untreated, leads to tartar.

If periodontal treatment is not provided in a timely manner, it may require dental surgery. Moreover, in severe cases, this condition can lead to tooth loss, increased risk of heart diseases, and exposed roots of the teeth. As the condition progresses, the bones and teeth gradually decay. Gum disease treatment is primarily focused on dental hygiene.

What Periodontal Treatment Options Are Available?

The treatment plans for gum diseases vary depending upon the severity of the disease. Following are the treatment options for periodontitis:

1. Periodontal Cleaning & Scaling

To restore periodontal health, it is necessary to remove accumulated tartar, calculus, and plaque from teeth. A deep cleaning process is used for this gum disease treatment. The process involves scraping off the layer of plaque and smoothing the edges of the teeth.

2. Periodontal Surgery

In cases when periodontal treatment of cleaning does not work, more invasive techniques are used by doctors. Surgery allows dentists to reach the sites of the teeth where brushing does not help in the removal of tartar as well as bacterial plaque. In this periodontal treatment, flap surgery is performed to lift the gums and clean the roots of the teeth. If the bones are damaged, bone grafting is performed.

3. Medication & Oral Hygiene Practices

Persistent gum diseases require the usage of antibiotics. Gum disease treatment often requires the dentist to prescribe antibacterial mouth wash, antibiotic gels, antiseptic chips, and oral antibiotics. Periodontal treatment does not merely focus on dental procedures. Rather, it provides great emphasis on oral hygiene. It involves brushing the teeth twice a day, using floss to clean spaces between teeth, or using a mouth rinse.
